Crowns also can be made of plastic or composite materials.  They are not as durable and are meant to be used as a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being made.

The Porcelain crowns that we used are called Empress crowns.  They are very “life-like” and are used in most areas of the mouth.  Sometimes, we choose to use a Captek crown that is a gold metal with porcelain covering the gold metal.  Captek crowns are used for second molars and for people with heavy bites.  We will choose a porcelain shade that matches the color of your natural teeth.

Porcelain crowns usually are so carefully matched in color, they cannot be distinguished from your natural teeth.  Many people choose porcelain crowns for their cosmetic appearance and the confidence it gives them.

Crowns also can be made of all gold.  Some people prefer not to use gold because it stands out from the other teeth in appearance.  At the same time, if the crown is on a back molar, some people feel the cosmetic issue is not a big one.  At Smile By Design we will discuss the types of materials available if we recommend a crown.
